To my fellow TR Super-Friends, I need to apologize, I have been very much AWOL lately and it culminated with a skipped Anti-FFF column :( Teaching. Research. Thesis. Life - what a bitch!
Anyway....
I want to put together my thoughts about a subject I hinted at a few weeks ago. Yes - interspecies sexual relations and how that may fit into the spectrum that is sexuality in general. I posit that sexuality is not a simple black & white issue of straight or gay, rather, people are a mixture of tastes and fetishes and desires. Indeed, the whole idea of straight or gay is a modern invention. Throughout the past, from the Mediterranean, to East Asia, and to the Americas, people moved freely around the sexual spectrum without any kind of shame attached to it. The ancients did it with men and women whenever the fever struck. And not only was there a tolerance of what would be called deviancy today but, especially among a few American tribes, there were also different shades of gender. I believe it was common among the peoples of what is now the South West to recognize three or four genders. Now, were am I going with this? Well, if there is a spectrum of sexuality among peoples of a single species, why not extend that concept to others species? Why can't a man be straight with other humans and gay with Cybertronians? Discuss!
ETA - Let me add that interspecies-sex is not exclusive to fanfiction. It's part of Star Trek since it started. Also, Human/Cybertronian, is totally canon! Yes, flesh to metal fetish is canon. I can think of a few instances of Human/Computer, Human/Robot canon.
