Video Games
I've managed to find myself a pristine copy of Unirally (Uniracers in other regions), and the box, the instruction manual (which is incredibly funny for its' time), and even the course maps poster are all in fantastic condition, and opening the package it came in reminded me of the first time I bought a copy of the game back in 1994, and, for other reasons apart from purchasing a great SNES game for $50 when the going rate for Super Nintendo games in Australia was either $99.95 or $120, was one of the greatest days of my life. After the jump, I'll mention my plans for the game, and beg you all to prove how much better you are at judging the quality of games than I am.

As mentioned in the original 'SNES Me Up' post (found here:http://scooteratreides.blogspot.com/2011/04/snes-me-up.html), I asked for recommendations of games I should be playing (of which you provided none) and I also asked if you'd like me to review them (which no one answered) so, in short, fuck you; I'm gonna review Unirally/racers, and you'll read it and, by God, you'll like it. (You won't.)
Anyway, I'm still open to suggestions, and if I get none, after the Unirally review I'll keep reviewing the worst SNES games I can find until you suggest something decent. (You won't; you'll ignore my reviews and forget I exist, and I'll be suicidal for a time, then discover joy in living an avant-garde life as the most ignored and marginalized man in history, using my pathetic life as a source of humor, because I'll find it hilarious that my life continues to get even worse than anyone could have ever envisioned!) Uh... I'm just going to find a corner and cry in it so as not to shame you with my tears....

Okay, I'm back, and happy, because I'm just bursting at the seams with crack-cocaine induced joy! But for reals, the Unirally review (henceforth I'll be referring to it as that, as it's the title of the PAL version which I'll be reviewing) should be up soon, and I'll try to bring something a little different to the table, as there are God knows how many sites dedicated to reviewing games from the golden era already. I hope you guys enjoy it, and I hope to hear from you regarding games I should take a look at. If that doesn't happen, then I'll review the games that had the biggest impact on me personally, and why, maybe due to where I was at that point in my life or some such other reason beyond just the quality of the game.
Good to speak to you all, and I hope I can produce something enjoyable for you all. Peace out.

Now that I've got your attention. :P

Hello Friends!

So it's like this:

As most of you undoubtedly know, Dr. Who returned triumphantly to American and British Television this weekend.

I didn't see it.

I keep planning on getting back into the show, but keep missing the chance...I'll just have to try harder--for the sake of my "Nerd Cred" (ahem) XD

Anyway, this reminded me of an old article on time travel in movies and TV I wrote back when I had no audience to speak of. I think it's one of my best articles, and it was among the writing samples I sent Rob Bricken back when doing lists for Topless Robot was just a crazy dream. :)

So I've restored it for all my loyal Taoists to enjoy.

Jump into Hyperspace and take a look!

(PS--On the off-chance there are readers who don't know, that was Karen Gillan up there. She's The Doctor's latest female companion....And I'm not worthy to have her Angelic form on my inferior little blog. Oh, I'm not taking down the pic--just recognizing I'm not worthy to post it is all)

Timescoot

An auspicious event occurred today: I finally saw Back To The Future 3.

I know, I know. I can already hear a chorus of "so what" ringing across cyberspace. Why is this occasion even remotely blogworthy? Two reasons: 1. This was one of those movies that while I was vaguely interested in finally seeing, I was never so interested as to actually rent, buy, or borrow it. So it was a matter of waiting for the proper confluence of events(an airing on TV, nothing else on, nothing better to do).

Well, I think it's a good reason.

And, much more importantly, 2. It reminded me of how difficult it is for people like me (obsessive, nitpicky geeks) to enjoy time travel movies.

In such cases, my evil alter-ego, "Buzzkill McSmartass" , rears his ugly head (this is especially problematic when I'm not alone--I've had friends refuse to watch movies with me). Now, I can usually tune him out enough to enjoy good performances, or funny jokes, or the like--but he doesn't go away, he just starts plying me with questions as soon as the film's over. There's nothing on earth Buzzkill McSmartass loves more than ripping a time travel flick to bloody shreds, and since I've also recently seen the high-concept, low comedy train wreck that is Hot Tub Time Machine(that's a little cruel, it's certainly funny if you don't mind turning off your brain), ol' Buzz has had his knives out for the genre.

So, to placate him, and perhaps share a measure of Geek Wisdom with my beloved readers, I present The 5 Things Every Movie Time Traveler Should Know.

1. YOU'RE ALREADY SCREWED!

In your average time travel film, there will inevitably be a character who has a hissy fit about making sure the timeline isn't altered. They spend the film walking on eggshells, doing their best to make sure none of their actions accidentally screw over the future.

Well guess what Sparky? You pretty much shitcanned history as you know it when you arrived in the past. Sure, maybe you're presence in 1955, or 1986, or whatever will have absolutely no ill effects--but the fact is, you're not supposed to be there. You've added a variable to history--and no one can say what its ultimate effects might be. Even if you get back to the present and everything seems normal, it may be that whatever events your trip to the past set in motion wont have noticeable effects for years, or decades, or centuries--it's impossible to know.

Fact is, if the characters in a time travel film actually took their own advice and did nothing at all to alter history, you'd end up with one boring-ass picture. All I'm saying is if you should, by accident or design, end up in the past, it's pointless to worry about mucking up time--the cow's escaped, no sense in fixing the barn door now.

2. CHANGING THE PAST WON'T CHANGE YOU

Another mainstay of the time travel film is the crucial decision that will result in a signifigantly improved life when the character in question returns to the present. In the aforementioned Hot Tub Time Machine, there's a character named Nick who, back in 1986, had aspirations of becoming a pop star. But by 2010, he's a p-whipped nobody married to a cheating shrew. So, naturally, his trip back in time enabled him to fulfill his ambition--and when he returned to the present, he discovered that not only had he become a very successful recording artist, but he'd actually founded, and was the president of, his own record label. Sounds great, right? Going back to 1986 was the best thing that ever happened to Nick, yes?

JUST ONE SMALL PROBLEM...

The past 24 years that Nick remembers are completely different from the 24 years that the rest of the world remembers--Nick has no clue how to run a record label! That part of his history essentially happened to someone else. How long do you think it's gonna be before his employees realize he has no idea what he's doing? And what about his past as a musician? What if he's asked to play some of his hits for a benefit concert or something? He doesn't know what his hits are, much less how to play them--they were written and performed by someone with 24 years of experience in the music business, not him.

And as for the Back To The Future series--I don't want to judge too harshly, the movies are classics. However, as far back as 1985 I remember being troubled by the notion that Marty has no knowledge of the new, improved present his trip to 1955 created.

Think of it this way--we as individuals are shaped by the environments we are raised in. Consider a child raised by George and Lorraine McFly as we knew them at the start of the first film--the offspring of a gutless corporate drone and a depressed, overweight housewife. Now picture the son of the McFly's version 2.0-- raised by a smooth, confident, successful author and his cheerful, attractive wife. Clearly, the end result would be two completely different people--two Marty McFlys that probably wouldn't recognize each other if they met on the street.

I'm not necessarily saying that changing one's past for the better is a bad idea--I merely point out that if you do, the You that you remember won't be the same You the world remembers. And you better be ready for that, or it'll seriously fuck with your head.

3. RELAX, YOU'VE GOT A FREAKIN' TIME MACHINE!

This is for movies where the characters have access to a relatively reliable and easily operated means of time travel--and nowhere is it better(and more amusingly)illustrated than in the Bill And Ted movies.

In the third act of Bill And Ted's Excellent Adventure, the duo is confronted with a number of challenges which are easily resolved through the use of time travel. My favorite is the matter of stealing Ted's father's keys to release the "historical figures" from jail. At the beginning of the film, Ted's dad found that his keys were missing and asked Ted if he'd taken them, he answered honestly that he didn't know where they were--because the decision to steal them wasn't made until after they were actually stolen, and Ted didn't realize he'd done it.

BILL: We've gotta remember to do this or else it won't happen!

TED: But it did happen--hey! It was me who stole my dad's keys!

This is called Reverse Causality, and it's a lot of fun to think about. By the end, they realize all they have to do is remember to go back and set things in motion, and whatever they need will appear(Trash can, remember a trash can!)

Here we have a rather satirical example of what most characters in such movies never think of. Truth be told, there's really never any need for any kind of tension or worry in a time travel film--something goes wrong, go back and fix it, period. Most of these films will do their best to short-circuit this concept by establishing the dangers of time travel and how they increase exponentially with repeat trips. Which brings us back to Item 1...

And remember "The Terminator Principle"--Time travel means literally endless possibilities for sequels, prequels, and TV shows.

4. DONT TRY TO EXPLAIN HOW IT WORKS, YOU'LL ONLY EMBARRASS YOURSELF

Fortunately, most time travel movies--particularly the ones that are more comedy than sci-fi, understand this. However, once in a while, you'll find films with a high enough opinion of themselves to trot out their questionable theories of temporal mechanics, to the endless delight of nitpickers and nerds like me. Filmmakers of the world, heed my warning: Unless your screenplay was co-written by Stephen Hawking, DON'T BOTHER.

My favorite example of this phenomenon comes from the ultraviolent Van Damme vehicle Timecop. This film explains that while travel to the past is possible, travel to the future isn't as it hasn't happened yet. You don't need to be a sci-fi geek or a Physics major to immediately spot holes in this concept.

Most obviously, if travel to the future is impossible, then how do you get back to the present? Time doesn't work that way--if you accept that travel through time in one direction is possible, then you have to accept travel in the other. It's like this: Time as we know it is one-dimensional, it only goes forward. The only way travel to another point in time is even theoretically possible is to assume at least one more dimension. And if we picture time as two-dimensional, then obviously one would be able to move backwards AND forwards.

To say travel to the future is impossible because it hasn't happened yet is absurd--because in the same sense that the future doesn't exist yet, the past doesn't exist anymore. If anything, I'd assume that travel to the future would be easier, as time's already going that way anyway(don't know if this is true, I 'm pulling most of this out of my ass).

It would seem to me that the makers of hard sci-fi feel it's necessary to find some way to explain how their time traveling doowhacky functions, but the best time travel stories have proven this isn't the case: Terminator never offered a lick of explanation for how the "time-displacement equipment" worked, and the movie didn't suffer a bit. An even better(and much nerdier)example is Dr. Who. Now I've gotta be careful here, all I know remotely well of Dr. Who is Christopher Eccleston's Ninth Doctor(and half the reason I watched that was to ogle Billie Piper), it's my secret geek shame--well, it was. Anyhoo, as I understand it there's no living human capable of understanding how the TARDIS works, I'm pretty sure even the Doctor doesn't understand it fully(Doctor Who fans--feel free to correct me), but this lack of information hasn't dissuaded forty-something years worth of diehard fans.

5. THERE'S ONLY ONE PAST.

Guess what:

90% percent of what I've written here is utterly meaningless(I mean pertaining to this subject, not in a deeper, abstact sense). See, history only happened one way. If it were feasible to go back ten years and, say, propose to the one that got away, the two of you would already be happily married. You may have just now decided to go back and fix things, but whatever it is you did or attempted to do happpened ten years ago as far as history is concerned. So unless you've got a ring on your finger and 2.5 healthy children--its safe to say that your endeavor will fail.

Oddly enough, the best example of what I'm on about here is in Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban. Specifically, when Harry and Hermione use the Time Turner to save the Hippogriff, Buckbeak.

If you notice, nothing is actually changed--we the audience never see the executioner's axe behead Buckbeak. We hear the axe chop into something which we assume is the Hippogriff, but when they go back we learn that the axe was driven into a pumpkin, presumably out of frustration as Buckbeak himself had mysteriously vanished.

More important is earlier when Harry encounters a mysterious figure who saves him from the Dementors by summoning a Patronus. Though Harry believes that somehow his father returned to protect him, he was actually watching his near-future self, and keep in mind this happened BEFORE Harry and Hermione even considered traveling back in time.

History doesn't sit back and wait for us to decide if and when we'll change it--if we can, it's already been done(see the Bill and Ted example in item 3).

So at long last we come to the end of this drivel, and I'm sure there are folks out there who would like nothing more than to explain to me how laughably weak my grasp of temporal theory is.

How do I know this? Because of what I have decided to call "Scooter's Law of Exponential Increase in Nerd Magnitude"(y'know what? how 'bout just "Scooter's Law"?)

Scooter's Law states that whenever a nerd publicly proposes a theory concerning a work of fiction, particularly if it's scientific or pseudoscientific, an even bigger nerd will inevitably appear to debunk said theory, and a bigger nerd still will appear to debunk the debunker, et cetera. If left unchecked, nerd magnitude will continue to increase exponentially until it destroys the universe--so be careful, Geeks!

Good Evening, World!

Welcome to my newest feature soon to be forgotten once I'm distracted by something shiny and/or boobs.

NPNN! Not Particularly Nerdy News!

See folks, whether I really intended it or not: This is a Nerd Blog. I'm a Nerd, so I write about what I know and what I like--Most of my readers are Nerds, so I write about things I hope will interest them.

But sometimes things of a less than nerdy nature will capture my interest and practically beg me to blog about them. Thus: NPNN!

Tonight's story: You folks seen this?

This is a J Crew ad that was sent in a mailer to thousands of consumers. Now, if you're a rational person, you're probably wondering not only what it's doing on my little Nerd Blog, but why it's ANYWHERE but in the J Crew ad it was made for.

If, on the other hand, you work for CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, or any of the major network news affiliates, then you see a vital debate on either a potential threat to the sexual identity of our children (WON'T SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?!) OR, an exploration of the growing phenomenon of juvenile transvestitism--depending on the slant of the outlet you work for.

Shut up...Seriously--newspeople everywhere: Just. Shut. The. Fuck. Up! Please!

If you must know the details, here's a link to an article in the Daily Mail...Somehow I feel better linking to a non-American news source in this case.

See, I'm not here to pick a side and join the debate--I'm here to say that anybody who would consider this a subject WORTHY of debate is fucked in the head: There are no winners in such an argument, only two different flavors of losers.

Imagine someone trying to start a debate on whether water is wet. There are only two possible responses: Either you're a rational person who knows water is fucking wet, or you're a delusional psychotic. So if you enter the debate: You're either mentally disturbed...or worse--the kind of person who would attempt to ARGUE with the mentally disturbed!

Yeeeah...that oughtta just about do it: I don't wanna give this non-issue any more press than necessary.

Tune in next time to NPNN--whenever I'm bored and there isn't anything sufficiently geeky to talk about.

Good Night, And Have A Pleasant Tomorrow.

Heeeeeeeeeeeey KIDS!

(I've always wanted to do that! ^_^b)

Once again, it's your dear, disturbed Uncle Scoot bringing you kiddie lit sure to keep children's therapists in business for many a year.

Uncle Scoot sure hopes you all read the first entry in his little book club: THE ELDER GOD AT THE END OF THIS BOOK! (The original title was "There's An Elder God At The End Of This Book", but you know editors ;) ) If you didn't, Uncle Scoot assures you that your parents will sell you into slavery and give all your stuff to your obnoxious brothers/sisters...if you're an only child, your stuff will be given to neighbor children.

But Uncle Scoot knows you're all good boys and girls, so you have nothing to worry about...right?

This week's assignment is gonna sting, for Uncle Scoot is well aware that this one is based on a classic that is near and dear to the hearts of many a TTOS reader...So, without further ado:

I especially like the "Hellmer's" glue factory in the background: Has a "Wacky Packages" feel to it. (in fact, I thought it might be a nod to a Wacky Packages card, but the Internet tells me otherwise)

Anyway, enjoy your repressed memories, kiddies!

(and thanks once again to Matthew Vimislik, for his superlative artwork, and Topless Robot, for holding such a fucked-up contest)

Uncle Scoot

P.S. In case any of you were wondering, I have indeed removed the Adult Content Warning. After giving it some thought, I realized there's nothing on TTOS that wouldn't make it through a SafeSearch filter (not anymore XD)--and I'm probably only alienating potential readers by having it up: Both the people who are immediately put off and assume this is a porn site, and the people who click "Yes" expecting porn only to be disappointed. So no more mystery: What you see is what you get ^_^

Hey Kiddies!

So I get an email from a gentleman with an interesting idea: He wants to make book covers for his favorite entries in TR's recent Inappropriate Sci-Fi/Fantasy Books For Lil' Nerds Contest. I received the honor of being his first subject. He sent me his vision of my entry's cover, and asked if he could go ahead and put it up on Deviantart. Naturally, I was delighted to grant him permission, and asked only that I be able to post the pic here for you folks. AND that he send me his future works.

Thus, TTOS presents its newest feature: CREEPY UNCLE SCOOT'S BOOKS 4 BRATS!!

Here's the first marvelous piece of children's literature to get Uncle Scoot's seal of approval:

Adorable, eh? Remember children: Read a book every day--Or the Old Ones will feast upon your soul!

This marvelous piece of art is the creation of one Matthew Vimislik. For more of his work, check out his website

Bad news, Peoples!

Today I bring you a rather tragic edition of my on again/off again feature celebrating all things MST3K.

I rarely find myself writing about the glory that is this incomparable program with so heavy a heart, for you see friends--Tirol9's YouTube Channel has been pulled for copyright violations.

Perhaps I should explain in depth:

Yesterday my MST3K-themed TR Daily List was published, and thus I was in the mood for a bit of MSTie goodness. I proceeded forthwith to my Youtube account, where I have (or had) literally dozens of eps saved in playlists. As I have mentioned in the past, early in my online career, before becoming so wildly popular and successful (and delusionalXD), I spent the majority of my time watching MST3K on Youtube. Not only did I get to recapture treasured memories of my dissolute youth, I also got a chance to catch up on the Sci-Fi Channel seasons. SFC wasn't available in my area back in 1997, and I never had the chance to make up for the time I subsequently lost...Until now.

This miracle is largely due to the wonderful folks at the Digital Archive Project (originally known as the MST3K Digital Archive Project) . These diehard MSTies have put uncounted hours and incredible effort into locating, cataloguing, restoring, and downloading as many MST3K episodes as possible: From the pre-Comedy Channel KTMA shows, all the way to the end of the SFC run. They started in 2001, just after SFC had canceled the show, but while they were still showing it in rerun. Oddly enough, the DAP was started for exactly the OPPOSITE of what I uesd them for: See, SFC didn't have the rights to any of the Comedy Central shows, so MSTies who didn't get into the show until it's last 3 seasons were denied ANY exposure to the first 7! They started out simply doing what every episode suggests at the end--that is: "Circulating The Tapes", and eventually started transferring and uploading the shows, many of which would then end up on Youtube, which brings us to Tirol9.

I don't know him or her, we've never met or corresponded. All I know is of all the users who took the time and effort to upload MST3K for the benefit of MSTies the world over,Tirol was the most dependable and prolific. He had scores of eps uploaded, the sound and picture quality was always excellent, the 9 to 10 minute chunks the shows had to be cut into for uploading were always expertly edited--never cut mid-sentence, and never more that a second or two at most would be lost between chapters. We, the MSTies of the Youtube communtity, honored and apreciated his/her efforts, and will miss him dearly.

For you see, as always, if one person on Earth is having a good time there's another wondering why they're not making money off him. NBC/Universal, who apparently hate joy and spit upon all that is good and pleasant (a bit much? I don't think so) threw a shit fit. Already they had successfully blocked certain eps from being downloaded--or made others only downloadable if you cut out the intros--or had episodes blocked if anyone in the comments says the name of the movie (seriously, try to find Gamera on Youtube, and see what happens)

In poor Tirol's case--they managed to get his entire Channel pulled. Not only does this mean I lost about 75% of the episodes I had saved, but I also lost nearly ALL of my Joel episodes! I've got maybe 3 left...What would he say about such a cruel injustice?

Indeed!

Yeah, sure...They own the copyrights, they can do what they want...But was having a few episodes of a show that's been off the air for a decade available for the perusal of fans really hurting anything? Is it any different essentially from recording a program on DVR or tape and sharing it with others? Only the scale is different. Furthermore, no one's making a profit here, and I seriously doubt if having the shows on Youtube is discouraging anyone from buying the DVDs--there's no comparison as far as picture and sound quality, no clicking the next part every 10 minutes, and Youtube won't get you special features and other extras.

In other, more succinct terms:

Fuck you, NBC/Universal.

Seriously, Fuck you in the ear.

We'll miss you, Tirol9:

This is a musical tribute and send-off I found. I very much wanted to find a clip of "Clown In The Sky", but my search proved fruitless (and even though they had nothing to do with it, I'm gonna go ahead and blame NBC/Universal for this, too). Fortunately, I found this utterly sublime remix of every MST3K Theme throughout the show's entire history.

If you're anything like me, you'll need to watch it with a box of Kleenex.

KEEP CIRCULATING THE TAPES!!!

Oi!

I's got music for da peoples today!

That right there, is the logo of Shonen Knife (少年ナイフ or Shonen Naifu in Japanese--literally "Boy Knife")       .

If you've never heard of them, there's really only one way I can think to describe them: Remember the origin story for The Power Puff Girls? Sure ya do! Well, imagine if after adding Sugar, Spice, and Everything Nice, instead of Chemical X, Professor Utonium tossed in a copy of the 1978 Ramones LP Road To Ruin.

Instead of Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup--you'd get Naoko, Atsuko, and Michie. (and later Etsuko, Ritsuko, and Emi)

Not a J-Pop band (nothing against J-Pop), SK (occasionally known as the Osaka Ramones) put a distinctively Japanese spin on American Old-School East-Coast Punk...The driving guitars and infectious, bare-bones rhythms are there--but the lyrics are about food, cats, bicycles, fish, candy, and rocketships...To describe the band in their own unique terms, they are--and I quote: "oo-oo-ultra-eccentric-super-cult-punk-pop-band-shonen-knife!"

Imagine if someone put Hello Kitty and Iggy Pop in the Brundlefly machine....

That's the original line-up: Michie Nakatani (Bass, left), Naoko Yamano (Guitar and vocals, center), and her sister: Atsuko Yamano (Drums, right). The photo is circa 1994. Here they are in 2009:

The line-up changed over the years (They formed in 1981, but were all but unknown stateside until '85--and didn't get a deal with a major label until 1992) Michie left the band in '99, Atsuko moved to bass, and Etsuko "Ettchan" Nakanishi became the new drummer (left, short hair) when temporary drummer, Mana Nishiura (not pictured), left the band in '04 (Tragically, Mana died a year later in an automobile accident while touring with Japanese Metal band DMBQ). In 2006, Atsuko quit the band after marrying and moving to L.A. (though she still plays whenever SK is in town) Touring bassist Ritsuko Taneda was then promoted to full member (Right, long hair). Naoko Yamano (center, duh) is the only founding member to have stayed with the band for its full 30 year lifespan (and one can't deny: she's remarkably well-preserved for a woman who'll be 51 this year!)

This lineup was maintained until last year, when Etsuko left (what is it about drummers?) and was replaced by Emi Morimoto (left, ponytail):

(EDITOR'S NOTE: It was 4 in the freakin' morning when I posted this originally--so it was a bit sparse. Thought I'd go back and juice it up a bit...Sorry for any inconvenience!)

Anyway, they're wonderful, magnificent, and adorable...Here in the States they've never had the success they deserved, and are best known as Kurt Cobain's favorite band:

Cobain sought them out after falling in love with their 1983 cassette, Burning Farm, which he first heard about when it was picked up by the indie label K records. (Later, Shonen Knife would also be distributed by the legendary grunge label SubPop) Amusingly, SK not only had no clue who Nirvana was, but also were a little afraid of Cobain and his cohorts. Later, Naoko would describe him as "very nice, but quiet".

SK became one of those bands that audiences didn't know (American audiences, at least), but other musicians loved...In 1989, a compilation album of SK covers by many of the biggest alternative acts of the late 80s and early 90s called Every Band Has A Shonen Knife That Loves Them was released. 20 bands contributed songs.

Bah! Time for me to stop wasting your time with mere words... hit the jump!

A serious note before you do: Our thoughts are with the people of Japan as they struggle to recover from the recent 8.9 magnitude Earthquake and the following Tsunami. Anyone wishing to assist can do so at http://www.redcross.org/

This is Tomato Head off of 1994's Rock Animals, probably the best known SK video in the States due to its appearance on Beavis and Butt-Head...FYI, this is about as "Dark" as Shonen Knife gets.

Here's a fan-made video for I Am A Cat from 1991's Let's Knife, SK's major-label debut. It's also my favorite SK tune, and may be the cutest thing ever to rise from the hand of man (3 words: SAMURAI. PIZZA. CATS!!!)

I'll have more videos for you folks soon, but I'll end tonight on a strong note with this vid for the title-track to 2009's Super Group. I Am A Cat may be my favorite song, but this is my favorite SK video by far! And try to wrap your head around this: The lead singer, Naoko Yamano, was 49 when she made this video...That's a 49 year old woman!

You always hear about how the Japanese are so much healthier than Westerners...How much more proof do you need?XD

More Knifey Goodness to come! I leave you with some lovely pictures of Ettchan:

Hey!

Results are in, and StrawHat's Honorable Mention from the Quibbler Headline Contest has come from behind to win Dr. Smashy's (George's) coveted second TR shirt. There was a total of 19 votes, and I apologize if anyone had trouble seeing the poll--Blogger's got cyber-cooties or some shit.

Roland of the Tower started off strong with: PERVERTS HOLD VIGIL AS HERMIONE GRANGER'S 18TH BIRTHDAY DRAWS NEAR. He lead the pack for several days only to be overtaken by a single vote after topping off at 7.

Green Lambkin's DUMBLEDORE'S DUMBLEWHORES came in 3rd with a total of 4 votes, and finally, StrawHat took home the prize when his DUMBLEDORE AND GANDALF MEET FOR THE FIRST TIME, REALIZE THEY'RE THE SAME PERSON, PROCEED TO MAKE OUT scored 8 votes.

So, Good work, StrawHat!

I'm afraid I don't know you personally, but come by anytime and join our community of merry wackjobs.

In honor of this occasion (and as a pitifully flimsy pretense to post more images of awesome boobage), here's a selection of Genderswap'd Harry Potter Cosplay Pics...Like this one:

This one's adorable--but the more..."ample" ones are after the jump (just thought you folks deserved the option--perhaps not all my readers are as keen on HP cosplay cleavage as I am)

Happy New Year, Peoples!

I have no idea what Playboy bunny costumes have to do with New Year's--I only know they show up in nearly every Anime/Hentai pic that has a New Year's theme. Must be a Japanese thing.

(FROM THE FUTURE:  My girl informs me that 2011 is the Year of the Rabbit, and even though that's from the Chinese Zodiac, it's apparently "trendy" to recognize it in Japan--Thanks Scout! (^3^) )

I know I've been away a little while--my fault. I've been lazy. But the Holidays are over, and I'm resolved to bringing you lucky people the best Nerd/Comedy/Current Events material a free, not-for profit blog can offer in 2011!

Arright, now I know I haven't technically been here for an entire year, and I didn't build up any signifigant momentum as far as readers go until late September. Regardless, I thought I'd share with you the top ten posts of 2010 (okay, technically the top ten posts of 9 months of 2010 and 4 days of 2011, but close enough, dammitXD)

I was as objective as possible: I personally did not choose any of these, instead, I just looked at the Stats. So these are the ten posts you folks visited the most often, for whatever reason.

Yes, I'm afraid most of these are mine--just worked out that way. and there are a lot of great writers here who aren't mentioned at all. Unfortunately, most of them are either too new, haven't written very much, or both--I'll give them their due in another post soon--Promise! <3

Follow me to the Top 10--after the jump!

Ok, for perspective's sake, the website itself has received 31,281 views since it started. These are the individual posts which have received the largest number of views, starting with #10...But first, have another one of these:

I just like 'em is all...^///^
(my girl taught me Asian Emoticons--wonder if I can list them on a job application as a second language)

10. SCOOTER'S HALLOWEEN MEMORIES: THE COSTUME SHOP 226 Pageviews

This was the first post I ever left the house to get pics and info for--almost like real journalism!XD

God, I love this place!

9. A FIELD GUIDE TO COMMON FANFICTION AUTHORS, PART ONE 240 Pageviews

The first in my series of exposes (imagine the accent my keyboard can't provide: ex-poe-saays) on the various bizarre species of writer that populate Topless Robot's weekly Fan Fiction Friday segment

8. Know Your Meme? Lighten The Fuck Up! 245 pageviews

One of the very first things I wrote for this blog was this rant against KYM for their sanctimonious rejection of the Topless Robot spawned meme: WHOSE RESPONSIBLE THIS? It was relatively ignored until recently when KYM's snubbing was brought up on TR, and I offered the Roboteers a link to this diatribe.

7. CONGRATULATIONS, COLLEEN! 328 Pageviews

Frankly, this is nothing more than me showering accolades on TTOS contributor/babe Colleen Seelke after her very first post, back on the old SOHB.

I'm guessing the popularity involves the pic of a semi-shirtless Robin Dunne I posted as a way of thanking her.

6. SCOOTER REVIEWS SOMETHING! A LOOK AT COMEDY CENTRAL'S UGLY AMERICANS 359 Pageviews

The first review I ever wrote...That is all.

5. Anti FFF "The Kikyo Effect" 359 pageviews (5 and 6 are technically a tie)

The first of Dr. Abraxas' brilliant series showcasing the other side of fanfiction (the well-written, mature, and interesting side...yes, there is such a thing)

4. A FIELD GUIDE TO COMMON FANFICTION AUTHORS, PART THREE 415 Pageviews

Apparently this series has been fairly popular, and there are more entries coming in the new year. Some of you may be interested to know that this very post is where I christened the TR Superfriends!

3. POLL RESULTS: TTOS SETTLES THE INTENSE, DIVISIVE DEBATE CONCERNING EMMA WATSON'S HAIR!  612 Pageviews

Multiple pictures of Emma Watson of Harry Potter fame are likely the source of this post's popularity...Sure, I can pretend it's my acerbic wit or superlative vocabulary--but why live in denial? I'll ride the wave of folks who want to bang Hermione Granger--doesn't bug me! XD

2. COMICSNIX! WISDOM FROM BEYOND TIME! 662 Pageviews

My insane theories about insanesier fanfic scribe ComicsNix.

1. Chuck's Mom Kicks Ass 772 Pageviews

Yep...Numero Uno ain't one o' mine! This is Colleen's synopsis of the first episode of Chuck, Season 4. And I actually haven't read it!

Now everyone here knows how much I love Colleen and her work, but I'm a Chuck fan and I've been unable to see any of it since the end of Season 2--ergo, I don't want any spoilers. So the most popular article on my blog is an article I can't read!XD

Thanks to all my lovely readers and contributors for making all this (such as it is) possible.

Have a great 2011, Peoples!

Scooter's Shiny New Year

A bemused Colleen here for the next installment of weird shit that one finds on the internet. This week is Pop-up related...

So ok today I'm perusing the internet and, although I get relatively few since I have pop-up blockers, THIS pop-up showed up...

Its an online application for the green-card lottery. Uh, ok. Sure. Why not? Except that I'm already an AMERICAN CITIZEN. Does the internet know something I don't???

That's it. So for any of Scoot's non-American readers, if you want a green card, here's the application. Your Welcome...

Gobble Freakin Gobble, Folks!

Thanksgiving's this Thursday--and if you're anything like me, I'm very, very sorry.

But hell, I'm not going to let a little thing like nowhere to go and nothing to do on a holiday based around family togetherness get me down!

I'm gonna cook myself dinner, I'm gonna kill a few hours with whatever marathon's are on cable--and at 7:00 PM CST, I'm gonna watch the Turkey Day edition of Night of the Blood Beast on Youtube!

And I invite all my fellow wretched holiday refugees to join me--you don't even have to bring a hot dish!(though it would be appreciated)

And don't worry if you're not American and don't understand our strange, provincial, made up festival where we celebrate the raping of the land and marginalization of its native peoples--watch the movie anyway! Eat your weird foreign foods! Have fun!

And we can all chat as we bask in the glory of this heinous classic--sound good?

Remember, Thursday--7:00PM CST, come to the blog, go to the link list and click on my youtube channel. Youll find MST3K-Night of the Blood Beast in the Favorites.

See you then--for now, here's a positively ancient commercial for what I believe was the very first MST3K Turkey Day Marathon:

Scoot The Thankful

Hail, Friends!

Gather 'round and witness my latest attempt at a regular, weekly feature:

Not much to explain--I love MST3K. MSTies know that what we feel for this show is closer to religious ecstasy than simple fandom. So, every week I'm gonna share with my dear readers a bit of audio/visual joy brought to you by Joel Robinson, Mike Nelson, Tom Servo, Crow T. Robot, Gypsy, Cambot, and Magic Voice.

Oh, and I suppose Dr. Clayton Forrester, Dr. Larry Erhardt, TV's Frank, Pearl Forrester, Prof. Bobo, and Observer.

We start off with what may well be the most popular original song ever performed by the SOL crew--words cannot describe it...

But let's try!

Dearest Readers--I give you:

TOOBULAR BOOBULAR!

TOM: Say fellas, there sure is a lotta skin in this movie, i'n't there?

MIKE: There sure is!

CROW: Yet despite all the acres of flesh in this film, I just can't come up with a word that describes it.

TOM: Well I can!

MIKE: You can?

TOM: Why sure. [starts singing]

It's breastakaboobical, chestakamammical,
Pendular globular fun!

MIKE: Fleshical-orbital moundular-scoopular?

TOM: Right-o, that's the one!

CROW: Is it gluteal maximal, tushital-crackular
Bunular morning 'till night?

TOM: Well, you're absotiglandular, fanny-fantastical,
Mastokafleshular right!

ALL: It's an arealogical, autoerotical, toobular boobular joy,
An exposular-regional, batchical-pouchular fun for girl and boy.
A latissimal-dorsical, hung-like-a-horsical, calipyligical ball,

CROW: The most bunular-funular,

MIKE: Fruit-of-the-loomular,

CROW: Frenchical-tongular,

TOM: Wabitaboobular,

MIKE & CROW: [slowly while Tom sings next lines]
Movie of them all!

TOM: Pendular-funular, fruit-of-the-loomular,
Frenchical-tongular, wabitaboobular,
Chestaka-orbital, smorgastiboobular,
Tushita-ticular ball!

ALL: Hey!

[Gypsy enters]

GYPSY: Hey guys, how's the movie?

ALL: [singing again]

MIKE: Oh, man, we got movie sign!

Later, All!

I Am Scoot--I Take Care Of The Place While The Master Is Away...

Salutations!

That nifty little sketch was done by Fräulein Fabi, TR poster and Superfriend in absentia(she's the disturbingly attractive automaton in the middle).

Many moons ago, this talented German lass offered her services to the crew here in capturing their personalities as works of art. But real life intervened, as I'm told it tends to, and she's only recently been able to work in earnest on this auspicious project.

As I understand it, Fabi's self-portrait is flanked by a quite literally "foxy" Myriam, and good ol' Abraxas(I shudder to think what exactly's in that so-called laundry bag).

Many more of us are in line to be immortalized by Fabi's hand--I hope to have more pieces like this to share with you folks before too long.

Oh, and Team Scoot has just signed a new rookie--once again plucked from the Bush League that is the Topless Robot comments thread. Everyone: join me in welcoming Boredlizzie!

I know literally nothing of the young lady, so I'll let her introduce herself properly when she sees fit.

Well, that should do it for tonight--readers and comment-surfers should expect a profoundly slow weekend. For it is Halloween, and people with money and social lives will no doubt be having a grand old time.

Ok, so I'm a little bitter--I'm sorry, but this is my favorite holiday, and it pains me to have nothing to do and nowhere to go.

Ah well--enjoy yourselves, ya bastards!

Happy Halloween!

Scoot(trapped in Waukegan)

Como Vai?

Once again, a faithful SOHB reader has granted me permission to transform her into a kickass WWE Digital Diva!(mark this day--it's likely the last time you'll see the initials "SOHB" used here)

This one's been a long time in the works. Those of you not amongst the ranks of the Superfriends, or who don't post on Topless Robot, probably don't know our Robbie very well. She is listed under "THOSE RESPONSIBLE" as a contributing author--but she's also a grad student working on her dissertation, and a full-time teacher. Ergo, she hasn't yet been able to share anything with us--we all eagerly await her contribution to my little blog.

So, for those amongst you who haven't had the pleasure--meet Roberta Leopoldino:

She's a very lovely girl--but a bit shy. I was granted the honor of a better picture(which is now my cell phone wallpaper), but I'll respect her modesty(though it baffles me) and stick with this one from her Blogger Profile. I'd rather not make the assumption that the pic I was sent was intended for public display(besides, she's got the same hairdo in this pic as I gave her Diva).

Robbie was technically the very first Superfriend--the first TR poster that I began corresponding with outside of that website, months before my blog became Topless Robot's de facto chat satellite. She was also one of the first people to sign up as a Follower. I don't think there's a single regular who's been with me as long as she has.

As I mentioned, she's a grad student and teacher. She studies English Literature and teaches English as a second language in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil--and works harder than any sane human should.

She is, of course, a Nerd of the highest order--getting to know her has actually made me appreciate being an American Nerd: So many geek essentials we take for granted here are either completely unavailable, or exceedingly rare in Brazil.

Bottom line: She's a brilliant, charming, and beautiful person--and I am a better man for knowing her.

Ok--I've embarrassed her enough: On with the Divolution!

Robbie's Diva is unique. The other two represent my attempt to approximate the requests of my subjects--Coleen and Joltess picked their own costumes, and I did my best to recreate them within the limits of Smackdown Vs. Raw 2010.

In Robbie's case, she granted me leave to choose her costumes--so this is all my creation, both in concept and execution. There is one exception--a Diva can have up to 4 outfits, and I was stumped on the last one. So I put the question to the assembled Superfriends, and dear Myriam made us all look like fools by suggesting the classic Hot Librarian. Everyone chatting that night felt like grade A morons. I mean really--what else do you give an English Lit scholar?

Oh, and for her Diva, I've decided to use the Portuguese diminutive of Roberta: "Beta". Not only have I always liked the sound of it, it also works very well as a Diva name, what with the long and illustrious roster of famous Divas with single names ending in "A": Lita, Layla, Chyna, Natalya, Melina, Maria, etc.

I'll start with the first outfit I made--it's pretty simple, in fact, it wouldn't be out of place at an actual match. All that really sets it apart is the Brazilian color scheme of yellow and green(I'dve put a flag on it--but Brazilian flags were not an available option)

Sorry about the pic quality--wish I didn't have to get these by photographing the TV.

Next is your basic Goth chick ensemble--you could probably find most of the pieces of this outfit at your local Hot Topic.

I had trouble with the third outfit. Robbie's something of an Anime fan, and even though it's not my scene, I live to serve the patrons of my Art.

Originally I made a Japanese schoolgirl-type costume, but it frankly bored me--it's been done to death, even by me on some of my original creations. So instead I went more of the warrior/martial artist route--and I'm rather proud of what I came up with: I call it "The Red Dragon"

This also will be the outfit featured in the video below.

Finally, we have the aforementioned Librarian:

But that's just the entrance attire--who'd want to wrestle in a pleated skirt and blazer? It'd be hot and constrictive, right? Fortunately, she's got this on underneath(and I swear--I was merely thinking of convenience and comfort here, no other considerations whatsoever!  ;) )

Here's Librarian Beta making her way to the ring:

And now, let's all watch as Beta gives one of my earlier creations--evil imp Hellion--an unholy beatdown:

Oh, I almost forgot--one other thing this game allows you to do is create your own custom-made finishing moves, so I made one for Colleen, Joltess, and Robbie(I'll have videos for the other two soon).

Watch as Beta performs The Rio Guillotine on her hapless opponent(about halfway through the clip).

There ya go folks, hoped you enjoyed this as much as I did. :)

Stay tuned for the rechristening of the blog--coming soon!

Trotinette

Bueno,

Sometime back in the mists of prehistory, Scoot had himself an idea: Since I so enjoy making custom Divas for Smackdown vs. Raw 2010 on the PS3, I offered my readers the opportunity to take advantage of my "skills". It was to be a new feature I called "Divolve Me!" where readers would send me pics and/ or specifications for their own Divas, and I would craft them and post pictures and videos.

Unfortunately, that was back when SOHB got less hits than most Amish websites.

However, now that I've got my trusty Superfriends I've a new opportunity to indulge my psychoses, and believe it or not--I got myself a couple takers!

So now the world gets to see my first completed Diva based on an actual human being!

Let's start at the beginning:

This here is SOHB contributor The Joltess--ain't she lurvley?

Each Diva can have up to four distinct costumes. For starters, she asked for an "Archaeologist".

Here's what I came up with:

Here's a closer look:

Whaddya think? Did I capture her?

Joltess posts on Topless Robot under the name "The Pirate Star", so it wasn't all that surprising when she included a pirate on her costume list. Take a look:

Let's try another angle:

For costume #3: Joltess decided to go Egyptian:

And turn:

Finally, Joltess gave no instructions for her 4th outfit--so I went out on a limb and made her a superhero. I figured Joltess sounds comic-bookish to begin with, and honestly--how much of a stretch is it to assume that this person:

just might appreciate a superhero costume?

EVILDOERS BEWARE!

So that's what we got for pics--Scoot do good?

Unfortunately, we've only got one video. I recorded several videos of The Joltess boldly making her way to the ring--but my roommate's crap computer won't support asf files. Fuck.

Fear not, I still have a hand-edited and assembled match highlight video of the type I commonly download to Youtube. It features Joltess in her Egyptian garb whaling the living piss out of Trish Stratus, observe:

So, there you have it. Dear Colleen is next on the list--I'll try not to take as long with hers.

Oh, before I go--a few updates. As is obvious, Firefly trounced it's competitors for the title of Most Attractive Sci-Fi/Fantasy Cast. Out of 19 votes, Firefly received 13 while BSG, Andromeda, and Smallville each ended up with 2. I honestly thought Firefly and BSG would have been almost neck and neck--shows what I know. I'll have a new poll up tomorrow.

SOHB pages The Meditation Chamber, The Serenity Parlor, and the Women's Studies Annex have all been added to, so take a gander and broaden your mind.

So far, only 3 readers have shared pics of themselves with their beloved tokens of Nerdity. Time to step up your game, people! Send your pics to scooteratreides@gmail.com
